To Infinity and Beyond!

A few days ago, Yahoo! news mentioned that the “Geobacillus Zalihae enzyme extracted from protein crystallisation that was tested in space by Malaysian astronaut Datuk Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor last year has received a patent in the United States”.

This brought a lot of excitement as the potentials seem endless: produce job opportunities for biotechnology graduates; enzyme used for industrial purposes; and we can even sell the technology to other countries! Sounds too good to be true? Well, the government seems excited enough to consider sending a second mission to space to the tune of RM 96 million! (o.O)

The Yahoo! Malaysia Editors had posted a question to ask all of you here, Should we spend US$30m (RM96m) on a second mission to space? So far we’ve had 40 answers, and many of you felt that we should actually spend that amount of money on basic infrastructure (or even improving our proton cars!) instead of exploring space. What do the rest of YOU think?

  1. Malaysia should not be too proud or too confident…so what if we have the patents ? The way I see it, spend the money on the basic necessities – education- health-housing….and….Malaysia lacks a good public transport system ….what good is it if we have all the patents in the world ? What good if we have built the spaceship itself ? Or simply, provide your children with good food, shoes and books, before you get yourself a BMW or Mercedes….got it ?

  2. Im also agree with Mr George Yap. It seem the spending on the second mission is too much cost and perhaps all this million of money involved should be wisely spend on our public amenities such as transportation, hospitalization, agriculture, and so on.

If the patented technology only benefitial for graduate who specialized in biotechnology and business sector who indulge with this technology, then we can said not all of the malaysian people is gained benefit from it. Only certain minorities will be rich enough for getting such technologies application.

  3. I think RM96m for the 2nd space prog is absurd. the gov should use the money to help the people of malaysia not to waste it for the 2nd space prog. i think 96m is too much. i think half of the money will go to someone (you know what i mean). the people of malaysia should voice out their opinion more loudly.
