Aaron Mokhtar’s ‘Biggest’ changes

As the only Malaysian on the final leg of The Biggest Loser Asia, Aaron Mokhtar has changed a lot – but in good ways.

For starters, he’s shed weight. Okay. A lot of weight.

Initially weighing 159 kg, 30-year-old Aaron has already lost as much as 46 kg overall (as of the last weigh-in) in about three months time.

Second, he now knows more about food than the average Joe – and he’s not hesitant to share his new-found knowledge to fellow weight-watchers.

“It’s not how much you eat but what you eat,” Aaron explains.

When in the past, he used to eat anything, Aaron says this has changed. “I’ve learned about calories…I am eating healthier now.  And because I am eating healthier, my family is eating healthier too.”

Of course, losing weight isn’t an easy task, even for someone like Aaron who used to have an active lifestyle.

So what keeps Aaron going? One word. Family.

‘I have been blessed. I have a lot of weight to lose. (Although) I was never faced with a brick wall…it is hard to be away from my family, but that is also what motivates me.”

But for Aaron, being on the show has changed him in other ways as well.

“My weight used to dictate my way of life,” Aaron shares. “I used to wear black all the time – not because it was my favourite colour, but because it made me feel better. I don’t want to get to that point ever again. “

“The show has definitely changed the people in the show but it’s not about winning or losing. It’s about winning and getting a bonus. “

Bonus, indeed. But is Aaron going to win the show? We’ll soon find out. But even then, it’s clear that he’s already a winner.

PS. We also have Sarimah Ibrahim here. She has been asking questions about health on Yahoo! Answers Malaysia in the last few weeks. This is her seventh question. What are other cooking methods that will make tasty chicken breasts without the guilt?

  19. With regards to Shah’s comments on HERBALIFE, I’m a Certified Nutritionist by the Open University of Malaysia. I don’t agree with the ways HERBALIFE uses for weight loss. My friends have been on it, and yes they lost a lot of weight within 1-2 months but the problem is they look old and weak. This drastic change is due to the meal replacement program they paid RM600 – RM1,200 per month for.

What happened was they replaced 2 meals per day, hoping to “cheat” the body into thinking it’s food that they are taking. Question to Shah is: what happens when you stop taking it? Answer: Your body prepares itself for a slower metabolism rate, meaning the food takes slower to process and thus, stores as fat faster!!

There is no magic “pill” if you want to lose weight and look healthy. You have to have a good cardio workout/exercise to keep your heart muscle pumping well.

Please do not be conned by these direct selling shortcuts to weight loss and feeling healthy.

Don’t mean to offend anyone but the truth is the truth.

  32. Congrats on being a finalist. It’s not about winning but about being in control of your health. Many malaysians have health problem but are too shy or too stupid to admit. i’ll be the first to admit. i’m a bit overweight. i’ve paid thousands to slimming companies but the results are slow but due to my lack of committment and time. the other problem is I LOVE TO EAT. It would be great if Aaron can share basic practical info on how to loose those unwanted fat without strainous exercises as seen in ABL.

  52. About 11 PM on November 30, 1996, a Hawthorne police officer pulled Hughes over for driving on the wrong side of the road. Hughes, the police report said, was making his way from Los Angeles International Airport to the Bare Elegance strip club. The officer had him exit his Jeep Cherokee and put him through several sobriety tests, which Hughes failed.

Hughes said he had only drunk two glasses of wine. But a field breath test registered a blood-alcohol level of 0.22, almost three times the legal limit. Says Dr. Haraszti: “On the face of it, that is diagnostic of alcoholism. It is such a high level that an ordinary person would not be able to stand up, much less drive. You have to use a lot to develop that level of tolerance.”

He had become a problem drinker by the early 1990s.

    Reason of Death:
The Los Angeles County coroner’s office concludes he died of a toxic combination of alcohol and Doxepin, an antidepressant he was taking to help him sleep. His blood-alcohol level was measured at 0.21, more than 2 1/2 times the legal limit for driving.

Hughes often stated that his mother died of an accidental overdose of prescription diet pills when he was 18, which he claimed was the impetus for founding Herbalife. Her autopsy and toxicology tests suggest her death was due to an overdose of Darvon, a painkiller[1]. At the time of her death she was 5-foot-6-inches tall but weighed only 105 pounds.

    Hughes’s Dad confession:

Hartman adamantly denies Jo Ann had a weight problem. “This whole story is not true,” he insists. But she did have a problem. “She was addicted to pain pills,” Hartman says, singling out the popular painkillers Darvon and Percodan, which have never been prescribed for weight loss. “She used them in combination to prolong the high.”
